AI Usage

General Statement

Conference Presenters

Due to a series of overlapping ethical and professional concerns (please see SFRA AI Value Statement), the SFRA kindly asks its members and contributors to refrain from the deliberate usage of generative AI programs in conference presentations and publications. As such, unless critically necessary for the argument and/or research of the presentation being proposed and given, generative AI programs should not be used in the production or dissemination of proposal or presentation materials (this includes text, images, and video generators). Therefore, all presenters should do their best to announce any planned use of generative AI (text, image, video, etc.) to the conference organizers when submitting your proposal and to explicitly label and make clear any AI use to the audience when giving the presentation. This policy holds for both virtual and in-person presenters, panel sessions, roundtables, and/or keynote presentations.

Some Appropriate Uses of AI

As sf researchers, there may be times that our research necessitates engaging with AI as part of the development of or evidence for the argument [e.g. research about how different AI platforms process particular prompts, investigations of AI biases, etc.]. How AI will be used should be made clear in the initial proposal and to the audience at the time of the presentation. Similarly, the use of AI translations should also be noted for both conference organizers and during presentations.

Conference Organizers

Likewise, AI programs should not be used by SFRA conference organizers in the production or dissemination of conference materials including programs, websites, posters, etc. (this includes text, images, and video generators).
